I had some time off this week and didn’t get much done when I should have, but it wasn’t a bad week. Certainly not as bad as it was for some Google staff. I’ve been dabbling/recoiling in horror at Javascript again.

I had some time off last week - I went to RHS Bridgewater and failed to photograph bees, and to a big Yayoi Kusama exhibition. The rest of the week was apparently headaches. But I still have links!

Going to an interesting conference early last week (Manchester Dev Con) coincided with a week of weird migraine symptoms. I’ve been zombie-like. I think my part of my brain has had a week off work - I got absolutely no coding done at all.

A busy and somewhat stressful week with more surprise consulting work than I’m used to, and unpleasantly muggy weather - both may be to blame for the much shorter list of interesting links this week. Or, maybe there were just fewer interesting things.

A Cup Of Matcha 15

I went to Sheffield last week, which isn’t that unusual in itself (lots of people go to Sheffield) but I think it might be the first time I’ve left Greater Manchester in about 3 years. I went to the UKEduCamp unconference where I only mildly embarrassed myself and met lots of friendly smart people.

Last week I went to a local one-day conference (Manchester Digital) which I think is the first one I’ve attended since the pandemic. A bit of a strain psychologically (and I managed to scald my hands and soak my trousers with hot water in the first 5 minutes) but a good experience. Which is fortunate because I’ve got at least two more conferences coming up in the next few weeks.

I had lots of fun last week starting to rebuild my big old metadata processing app using the new Smee libraries that were originally based on chunks of scrappy code copied from it. A few things don’t quite line up properly, a few features are missing, and one or two features need to be optional - other uses of Smee so far (like an MDQ app) assume slightly different data. But overall it’s working out nicely - the new app is simpler, faster and much more reliable.

A Cup Of Matcha 12

I managed to release a couple of things as open source last week and start a couple more, and the old, messy app that Smee is based on is now being rewritten with it. So far the rewrite has definitely paid off.

SmeeLive - making it easier to run Smee packages in LiveBook

published on 2023-06-07

SAML metadata parsing tool SmeeView was released yesterday, joining Smee and SmeeFeds, and like the others it has a LiveBook notebook of examples - there’s a blue button in the readme to open it. LiveBook is a web application that’s a bit like a wiki but has interactive notebooks that can run Elixir code.

A Cup Of Matcha 9

This week I mostly learned that if you use macros and other tricks to quickly and easily create a very large library of modules and functions, you’ll reach a point where you realise there’s no way to avoid the enormous amount of documentation and tests you now need. But I also found these interesting links.
